Working with Posttraumatic Stress: Current & contextual considerations

In this insightful and clinically focused talk, Professor Gill Eagle presents current evidence-based approaches for working with clients experiencing posttraumatic stress. Drawing on both cognitive-behavioural techniques and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), this presentation identifies the core effective components of trauma treatment and guides psychologists in implementing these methods with clarity and care.

In addition to therapeutic strategies, this training explores complex contextual factors - including continuous traumatic stress, sociocultural dynamics, and intergroup prejudice, which shape the trauma experience. While grounded in the South African context, the discussion offers cross-applicable insights relevant to psychologists working in multicultural, high-stress, or marginalised community settings.

A dedicated section on vicarious trauma equips practitioners with tools for self-monitoring and resilience-building, ensuring ethical and sustainable practice.
